Animal painter Edmund Osthaus (1858-1928) was born in Germany and formally studied painting there before emigrating to Ohio in 1883. Greatly influenced by his mentor Christian Kroener, a well-known animal painter, Osthaus dedicated himself to painting portraits of pedigreed hunting dogs. After relocating to the United States, Osthaus headed a fine arts academy but devoted himself to his paintings full time after it closed. Paintings by Edmund Osthaus reflect his lifetime sporting pursuits. In addition to his canine portraits, Edmund Osthaus' prints also realistically depict landscape scenes of ranching or hunting featuring dogs in the field. As a versatile artist, Edmund Osthaus worked in oils, watercolors, pencil, and pen. He passed away at his quail hunting lodge in Florida at the age of 70.
